7 Ways to Avoid Sun Damage
Sun damage is one of the biggest culprits in causing our skin to age prematurely.
Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause wrinkles and reduced elasticity. Whether you’re lying on the beach, going skiing or running errands, you need to be mindful of sun exposure, even in winter!
Here are 7 simple steps to protect yourself and help preserve your skin’s youthful appearance.
1. Wear Sunscreen Every Day
If you’re planning on being out in the sun for longer than 15 minutes, make sure to use a sunscreen with at least SPF 15. Use NuGlow’s Daytime Therapy with SPF 15 to save a step by moisturizing and protecting your skin at the same time! Sunscreen does wear off, so make sure you reapply about every two hours. Also make sure you reapply after swimming or any activity that makes you sweat.
2. Protect Your Eyes
The eyes are one of the first areas to show signs of aging. The skin around the eyes needs extra hydration, even if the rest of your face doesn’t. Sunglasses help shield the skin around your eyes from UV rays. Look for a pair clearly labeled to block 99 percent of UV rays. Also try and find glasses with wider lenses to protect the delicate skin around your eyes.
3. Moisturize Your Lips—They Age Too
Don’t neglect your thin-skinned lips. They’re particularly vulnerable to painful sunburns and the lip lines and wrinkles associated with aging. Remember to always apply (and reapply at least every hour) a lip balm with sun protection.
4. Wear UPF Clothing
Consider special clothing that protects the skin from the sun’s UV rays. Like the SPF on sunscreen, the higher the UPF (ultraviolet protection factor), the more the item protects. Clothing with a UPF of 15 is rated as “good” while a UPF of 50+ is rated as “excellent.” UPF clothing is especially beneficial if you’re in high altitudes or near reflective surfaces like snow.
5. Watch the Clock
UV rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (Tip: Check your shadow. If it’s very short, it’s a bad time to be outside.) If you’re out during these hours, stay in the shade under a beach umbrella or a big, leafy tree.
6. Wear a Hat
A stylish way to protect your skin from the sun! Choose a hat with at least a 2- to 3-inch brim all around to cover the skin on your face, ears, and neck.
7. Eat the Right Food
Tomatoes contain lycopene, a bright red pigment that helps prevent UV damage in the skin. Lycopene is absorbed better in cooked tomatoes, especially tomato paste. You can also find lycopene in watermelon and grapefruit.
