Sweat to Keep Your Skin in Knockout Shape
The Best Workout for Your Skin in the Opinion of a Beauty-Obsessed Fitness Fanatic
By Bianca Jade
I’ve been a fitness fanatic and skincare enthusiast since my teens, so I’ve had a lot of time to figure out what works and what doesn’t when it comes to having beautiful, glowing skin.
One thing I can tell you that no doctor would dispute is that your skin is your largest organ. You need to take care of it meticulously, every day. Like a fine piece of clothing, the more you wear it without cleaning it, and carefully tending to it, it will begin to show its age faster than you can imagine.
It’s important to start thinking about your skincare regimen as early as possible. I wish I had been told in my teens not to take my anxiety out on my face by picking at it. But, it’s also never too late to start working on better skincare. If you’re older, I’m just going to warn you, it’s going to require some serious energy!
Fitness is the Secret to Gorgeous Skin
The secret to having gorgeous, supple skin at any age is fitness. Exercise helps our bodies with blood circulation and detoxification. We build up a lot of impurities based on the things we breathe, eat and drink. Getting rid of those impurities and toxins makes our bodies healthier and perform better. Exercise also helps us reduce stress by making our bodies produce mood-boosting endorphins.
Sweating Helps You Detoxify
What’s the best workout you can do for your skin?
The answer is any workout that makes you sweat—and I mean, really sweat—enough to require a hand towel to dry your face and body.
Sweating opens your pores and lets everything out that would otherwise clog them up and lead to unsightly blemishes. The more you sweat, the more you’re cleansing your skin.
Don’t think of it as just your face, either. You’re releasing the build-up in the skin all over your body. It could be salt, calcium, maybe even alcohol from your crazy night out last weekend.
Sweating won’t just help you avoid pimples but can help alleviate more severe skin problems. Sweat contains antimicrobial peptides that help fight bacteria and other microbes. So, don’t be afraid to exercise if you have a skin condition or are fighting a cold, because in many instances, sweating may help. I wouldn’t recommend going to the gym sick as a dog, but if you’re well enough to move and jump around, it could be good for you!
My Top Three Workouts for Building Up a Good Sweat to Detoxify Your Skin
- Boxing. With boxing, it can be any kind of cardio boxing class like kickboxing, shadow boxing, or classic boxing style where you wear gloves and hit the bags. There are also some great boxing classes that incorporate jumping rope, abdominal work, squat jumping and lunging cardio bursts. You’re going to be in constant motion and sweating a lot in a boxing class. One of my favorite boxing franchises located throughout the United States is called Title Boxing Club.
- HITT Workouts. HIIT stands for high intensity interval training. It’s similar to circuit training, except your rounds are faster with shorter reps. HIIT workouts and group fitness classes are amazing for building muscle tone and definition throughout your body. You will sweat like crazy and feel amazing once it’s over. A few fantastic studios to try HIIT throughout the country are The Fhitting Room, Barry’s Bootcamp, Shred415 and Orange Theory.
- Running. Becoming a runner requires training, especially if you weren’t born with the running bug. But once you learn proper form, how to breathe and build your body strength up for endurance, you can soar. Running is one of the best workouts you can do for your skin, because not only are you sweating, your heart is pumping oxygenated blood to every crevice of your body while endorphins flood your system. If you’re going to run outside, it’s important to wear at least 50 SPF because the sun can do a lot of damage to your skin and cause premature aging. If you don’t like running with product on your face, purchase a run hat as well as other active wear made with SPF-coated fiber technology.
Stay Hydrated & Take Your Own Towel
As a beauty-obsessed fitness fanatic, these are the workouts I rely on to clear up my skin and give me a natural glow. With each workout, I always drink plenty of water to stay hydrated—at least one full water bottle!
I also carry my own clean towels in my gym bag, even when the gym is full-service, because I know for a fact how they were washed and the products that were used. If you have skin allergies, it’s always best to rely on your own accessories and equipment.
Take Care of Your Skin Before & After Your Workouts
I’ve suffered with sensitive skin for years, but I must say that exercising 4-6 days a week has helped keep my sensitivity at bay. I try my hardest not to work out with a full face of makeup on, but sometimes it just isn’t possible to do a full wash when I’m rushing to a class. I keep cleansing face wipes in my gym bag for these kinds of emergencies.
The one thing I always do though, is wash my face post-workout. If you don’t wash up after a workout, a lot of that sweat that dried on your face will stay there, toxins and all. And then you’re in trouble when it comes to blemishes! So, just make sure to hit the shower as soon as you can after a workout.
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and hydrate with a serum or moisturizer. Copper, a featured ingredient in NuGlow’s anti-aging skincare collection, can nourish your skin, promote collagen production and encourage cell turnover.
What it really boils down to is: Sweat. NuGlow. Repeat.
